Can West overcall with only 7 points?
- Question
1
Can West overcall with only 7 points?
Answer
Yessir! First, it's a good lead if East ends up on lead. And being Spades, it's very disruptive. North will have to start telling little lies to his partner. He's too weak to bid 2 diamonds, but what choice has he got? After all, his partner could easily be strong (and unforgiving?).
- Question
2
If East now puts on more pressure with a 2 Spade bid to the limit of the fit, what should South then bid?
- Question
2
If East now puts on more pressure with a 2 Spade bid to the limit of the fit, what should South then bid?
Answer
The best bid is 3NT. That's because in this case, the Spade overcall points to a likely lead of Spades from West, which will promote the King. All South has to do is pray for a 3-2 club split, and 3NT should come home. In this instance, his prayer was answered. However, the overcall will have put many NS pairs under auction pressure, and some will miss the contract.
And next time the clubs will split 4-1, maybe....
